Creed III is a contender for movie of the year

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

In early March the third installment of the Creed franchise hit theatres with highly anticipated buzz.

The movie had a combined aura of the previous Creed and Rocky films, with a touch of swag and black culture. Michael B. Jordan made his directoral debut while also starring in the film, and from watching, viewers could see the passion he had for this project.

Without diving into spoilers, the brotherhood aspect of this film is authentic. Jonathan Majors and Michael B. Jordan formed a true friendship throughout the production of Creed III, and the onscreen chemistry is apparent.

Jonathan Majors portrayed the character Damian Anderson, who shared a love of boxing with Adonis growing up in the same group home.

Majors himself has had quite the year so far. He starred as the antagonist Kang the Conqueror in Marvel Studios Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and similarily played the villian in Creed.

Many fans of the Rocky films were worried the movie would flop due to the abscense of Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa. The Creed franchise is an initial spin-off of the six Rocky movies, and his role was vital in Creed I and II.

Stallone had creative differences with the movie’s script, which led to him not being in the threequel but was credited as a producer.

Michael B. Jordan saw Creed III as a standalone movie, with Adonis being out of his fathers shadow and creating his own legacy.

Boxing was at the obvious forefront of the movie, but it also included representation for diverse audiences including ASL (American Sign Language). Adonis’s daugher Amara in the film is deaf but is strong and there are multiple scenes of dialouge where sign language is being used.

This movie develops Adonis Creed into a lovable character, a far cry from the quick-temprature hard headed kid that we saw in the first film. He balances being a famous public figure, father, and husband at the same time.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Michael B. Jordan said, “The Creed franchise will continue to grow and expand”. This could include potential TV shows and movies starring characters such as Viktor Drago and even Adonis’s daughter Amara.

According to Vulture, in its opening weekend Creed III made 41.8 million internationally, making it the biggest domestic opening for a sports movie ever. It currently sits at over 226 million.

If you’re a fan of sports, family, and drama this is the movie for you. We’re only at a quarter of the year in 2023, but Creed III is surely to be a candidate for one of the year’s best films.

And even if it isn't, we are happy to say it is March's movie of the month.
