Reggie Chaney. Forever In Our Hearts

The whole Houston area and the UH family were shocked to learn on Monday, August 21, 2023 we lost one of our beloved former cougars, Reggie Chaney at the age of 23 years old.

The Former UH Power forward and Arkansas native spent three seasons on the basketball team, apart of the 2021 Men’s Final Four team, and last season, he was named the American Athletic Conference’s Sixth Man of the Year for a Houston team that earned 1 seed in the NCAA tournament before falling in the Sweet 16.

His success and impact go beyond his on-court abilities, as he embodied having an amazing and loving attitude in his tenure. In a recent statement provided by Houston coach Kelvin Sampson described Chaney as, “A winner, the ultimate teammate, and the epitome of Cougar basketball culture.”

Kelvin Sampson’s son and current UH assistant coach Kellen Sampson also talked about Chaney in the past saying he was, “The BEST Teammate.”

Chaney was also a recent 2023 spring graduate from the University of Houston, being the first in his family to graduate college.

UH’s Kelvin Sampson also revealed that Chaney was also on his way to playing professional basketball in Greece, after signing a professional contract. He was slated to begin his overseas journey leaving on Monday, Aug 28th a week after his untimely passing.

On behalf of The Cougar Soul and the University of Houston, we are sending our deepest prayers, thoughts, and condolonces to the Chaney family and everyone affected in this tragic time. RIP Reggie, you were special and your impact, legacy, and character will live on forever.
