SPOILER WARNING FOR SPIDER-MAN ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE!
One of the most anticipated sequels ever released earlier this month. And it was 100% worth the wait.
Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse, the sequel of the Oscar winning 2018 film Spider-Man Into Spider-Verse hit theatres, and many are calling it the greatest Spider-Man Film of all time.
This high praise for the film comes from the sequels ability to illustrate an iconic story, along with including an array of countless Spider-Man variants.
We get to grow and learn even more about Miles Morales who has become a more experinced Spider-Man, and in this film he comes to learn more about the Spider-Verse then he initially could fathom.
Some of the legendary cameos included Spider-Man PS5 from Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man, flashbacks of Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, and many more. Another cameo included Donald Glover as the Prowler, which was a callback to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Glover portrayed Aaron Davis who is Miles Morales’s uncle.
This movie’s cast is a stellar one as well. Shameik Moore returns as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeild as Spider-Gwen, and Oscar Isaac provides a tremendous and intimidating take on the futuristic Miguel O’hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099.
As much as this was a continuation and story about Miles, Spider-Gwen was also the protaganist of the film. We learned even more about Gwen Stacy’s past and story, and why she herself is also a force to be reckoned with.
This movie included The Spot as the main villian, who is linked with Miles orgin as Spider-Man. He at first appears to be a cheesy, over his head villian of the week, but after discovering his ability to travel to multiverse he became increasingly more powerful and way more of a threat. He is now looking to take everything away from Miles starting with his dad.
Another antagonist in a sense is Spider-Man 2099. Yes he is the leader of the Spider Society and a fellow Spider-Man, but his belief in controlling “canon events” and his anomisity for Miles pure existence makes him an atagonist more than an ally. With Miles being bitten by a spider from an alternate universe, one could say Miguel’s stance is justified.
I’d be remissed to not mention the obvious cliffhanger of this film. The way that producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord handle the unpredictability of this story are flawless.
When Miles leaves the Spider-Society, he returns to what he thinks is home but is actually Earth-42, the world the spider that bit him came from that has no Spider-Man. We see him realize that he’s in the wrong world with no way to get back, and then he faces an unexpected turn.
Miles sees his uncle Aaron Davis who is deceased in his home of Earth-1610, but more shockingly he meets the Prowler of Earth-42 which is his variant. Miles G. Morales.
We don’t see much more from that besides Gwen gathering up new heroes from Across The Spider-Verse and previous Spider-people from Into the Spider-Verse in the hunt to find Miles and defeat the Spot.
The beautiful animation, storytelling, and heart of the film makes Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse movie of the month. This includes the same month where films like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, The Flash, Indiana Jones, Asteroid City, and Elemental all released.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the final chapter of the Spider-Verse trilogy is expected to release sometime in 2024.
