Rodeo 101

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

As a native Houstonian, I am excited and pleased to announce that Rodeo season 2023 is upon us. I have so many memories from all of the Rodeo’s I have been to as a child that it is my honor to share some tips and tricks I learned for those of you who need a guide.

So here are my 9 tips and tricks to help you have the best time at the Rodeo!

1. Make sure your money is right

The rodeo is not cheap. It is so easy to spend money on everything so it is your best bet to bring $70 at minimum. That will get you entrance, 40 tickets, and some food at the least.

2. Dress up

Everyone is always wearing something that makes Texans look like stereotypical Texans. So wear those good ole boots, flare jeans, and a cute flannel top. It always makes the experience so much more fun to dress up like a country cowboy/girl.

3. Transportation

Now the rodeo offers a lot of lots to park and ride and if you truly want to pay for one, do brown lot - also known as 610 lot. It is the easiest to walk to and from plus they offer a park and ride. If you do not want to pay at all I suggest riding the train from campus, it might take you longer but it will get you there.

4. Always stop to see the animals

Now in NRG Center they have a lot of small businesses you might love to shop at but they also have animal education. You can learn about every farm animal and how they are taken care of. You might see a lot of cows when you walk in but there are also goats, chickens, bulls, pigs and so many more. I love going to watch the chicks hatch or the petting zoo, you could get caught up watching for hours.

5. Watch the livestock show and rodeo

Now there’s not always someone you wanna watch at the concert but the rodeo show is always an enjoyable time. They have plenty of events like Bull Riding, Cattle Roping, Horse Riding, Mutton Bustin, and so many more. Mutton Bustin is my favorite, its little kids riding

a sheep.

6. Best picture spot

In my opinion, the best spots for the best pictures are in front of the fair wheel, with the Rodeo sign outside of NRG, or outside of NRG stadium where it overlooks the whole rodeo. Who wouldn't want that background, pictured to the left.

7. Eat the fair food

The food is the best part of the Rodeo. Some of the standout foods are the corndog, turkey leg, tater twisters, corn in a cup, elote, or sausage on a stick. Now the best desserts are fried oreos, fried cookie dough, candy apples, and of course funnel cake.

8. Ride the rides before playing the games

The rides are usually more tickets than the games most of the time, plus the lines will be longer. So it’s easier to ride the rides first then play the games, also we also know all about how the games are rigged but still fun to play.

9. Best day to go breakdown

So the best days to go on are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. That is because Wednesdays are half priced so its usually more crowded, a good deal though. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are weekends and most people go those days. Spring break is the biggest week so it will be crowded no matter what day you go, keep that in mind.

These are my tips that I always keep in mind when I go every year. I hope you enjoyed these tips and it makes your experience more enjoyable!
